Food Safety Modernization Act – What is it?

In this article we will explore what is the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and how manufacturers can be compliant.
The threatening FSMA which is making everyone in the food industry scared.
Signed in 2011, it is the most sweeping reform of food safety laws in the US in more than 70 years.

According to FDA, “About 48 million people in the U.S. (1 in 6) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die each year from foodborne diseases, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is a significant public health burden that is largely preventable”. And that’s why they are making food supply safety a priority!

The legislation’s vast new requirements are applicable to the food and beverage industries, but also to the packaging industry.

There are seven FSMA Food Rules (laws):

  • Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food
Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals
  • Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption: covers most types of products that are ready to eat without processing (21 CFR Parts 11, 16, 112)
  • Foreign Supplier Verification Program for Importers of Food for Human and Animals
  • Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration
  • Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food
  • Accreditation of Third Party Certification (To whom will Conduct Food Safety Audits and Issue Certifications on behalf of the FDA)

The FSMA establishes a mandated inspection frequency, based on the risk of food facilities and requires the frequency of inspection to increase immediately. FDA will have access to all the production records, including industry food safety plans, which shall be documented by the company.

These inspections are unannounced and that is the main reason why Food and Beverage Manufacturers are looking for solutions to digitally manage their production, keeping their information updated and every report at a one-click distance.
